You've Been De-Iced. So Why Is the Plane Still Sitting There?

The trucks finished. The green fluid is dripping off the wing. And you are still at the gate. There is a specific reason, it is measured in minutes, and understanding it tells you whether your delay is about to get much worse.

The short answer

De-icing starts a stopwatch called holdover time — the window during which the fluid on the wing is still doing its job. The clock starts when the fluid is applied, not when the truck drives away.

If the aircraft is not airborne before that window closes, the protection is considered expired. The crew cannot legally depart on expired fluid. The aircraft has to be sprayed again, which means rejoining the de-icing queue.

So the plane sitting motionless after being sprayed is not idleness. It is a crew watching a countdown and calculating whether the aircraft in front of them will clear the runway in time.

Two fluids doing two different jobs

People assume de-icing is one operation. It is usually two, with different chemicals and very different durations.

Type I — removal. Thin, heated, usually dyed orange. Its job is to strip existing ice, frost and snow off the airframe. It is not designed to keep protecting afterwards, and it does not for long: holdover time for Type I runs roughly 3 to 22 minutes depending on temperature and how hard it is precipitating.

Type IV — protection. Thick, viscous, dyed green, applied cold. It clings to the wing and prevents new ice forming during taxi and the wait for takeoff. This is the one that buys real time: roughly 20 to 160 minutes, again depending on conditions.

In heavy snow the standard procedure is both, in sequence: Type I to clean, Type IV to protect. If you watched two different colours of fluid go on, that is what you saw — and it is a good sign, because it means the crew bought the maximum window available.

What eats your holdover time

The numbers above are ranges because holdover time is not fixed. The FAA publishes official holdover time tables every winter — reissued each August for the coming season — and crews consult them for the exact figure that applies to the fluid, the mix ratio, the outside air temperature and the precipitation type and intensity in front of them.

Three things shrink the window fast:

Heavier precipitation. Wet snow and freezing rain consume the fluid far quicker than light snow. Freezing drizzle is the worst case and can cut protection to minutes.

Colder temperatures. Below roughly -10°C the fluid thickens and performs differently, and some concentrations stop being approved entirely.

Queue length. This is the one that actually strands you. Ten aircraft ahead of you on a single-runway departure in a snowstorm can consume an entire Type IV window before you reach the threshold.

Why some aircraft get sprayed twice

If holdover expires before takeoff, the crew has two options and neither is fast.

The standard route is a pre-takeoff contamination check — trained personnel inspect the wing surfaces to confirm the fluid is still working. If it passes, the aircraft can go. If it fails, or the airport does not permit that check in the prevailing conditions, the aircraft returns for a second application.

That second trip is where a 40-minute delay becomes a three-hour one, because the de-icing pad is now serving every aircraft that departed the gate in the last hour and each of them is in the same position.

The cascading version is worse: crew duty limits. If the repeated cycles push the crew past their legal duty day, the flight cancels outright — not because of weather, but because the clock ran out on the people flying it. How to read your own delay

You can estimate your situation from the cabin without any announcement.

Sprayed once, orange only, and moving within ten minutes: light contamination, short window, and the crew is confident. This is fine.

Sprayed twice, orange then green, moving promptly: the crew bought the long window on purpose. Also fine, and a sign of a well-run operation.

Sprayed, then sitting still with the engines running and a long queue visible: the countdown is running against you. This is the moment to open the airline app and look at what else is departing to your destination today — before the cancellation is announced and several hundred other people have the same idea.
