Most "Universal" Travel Adapters Can't Charge a MacBook. Here's the Number That Matters

Every universal adapter claims 150 countries. Almost none of them mention the only number that decides whether your laptop charges while you work: sustained USB-C Power Delivery output. Here is what to look for.

The short answer

Look for 65W or higher on a single USB-C Power Delivery port. That is the whole decision.

A typical cheap universal adapter delivers around 5 to 12W over USB-A. That charges a phone slowly and will not charge a modern laptop at all — or worse, it trickles just enough that your battery drains slower than it would unplugged, which feels like a broken adapter and is actually a spec mismatch.

A 13-inch laptop wants around 45W. A 15 or 16-inch machine, or anything running an external display, wants 65W and up. Under that number, you are not charging while you work; you are slowing the decline.

Why plug count is the wrong thing to compare

Adapter listings compete on the things that photograph well: how many countries, how many ports, how many sockets slide out.

None of it matters if the wattage is wrong. A device that fits every outlet on earth and delivers 10W is a phone charger with extra plastic.

Worse, port count actively works against you on cheap units, because the advertised wattage is the total across all ports, not what any one port delivers. A "65W" adapter with four ports may give you 65W only when three of them are empty — plug in your phone and your laptop drops to 45W or less. The specification you want is the single-port maximum, and honest manufacturers publish the split.

What GaN actually changed

This is the one genuine advance in this category in the last few years, and it is worth understanding rather than treating as a marketing word.

Gallium nitride replaces silicon in the switching components. It runs more efficiently, which means less waste heat, which means the same power output fits in a much smaller and lighter body. That is the entire story — but the practical effect is large.

Before GaN, a 65W universal adapter was a brick you resented. Now 70W units weigh under six ounces, and 100W models exist at similar size. Current pricing runs roughly $40 to $60 for 65W to 100W GaN units, against $15 to $25 for the underpowered old design.

Heat is the honest test of a good one. A well-built GaN adapter holds under about 45°C after hours at full output. A cheap one gets uncomfortably hot and throttles, which is why "it charged fine for twenty minutes then stopped" is such a common complaint.

How to read a spec sheet in thirty seconds

Four checks, in order.

1. Single-port PD wattage. Find the number for one USB-C port with nothing else connected. 65W is the working minimum for a laptop, 45W if you only carry a 13-inch machine.

2. Total versus per-port. If the listing gives only one number, assume it is the shared total and that everything drops when you plug in a second device.

3. Socket coverage for where you actually go. Type A/C/G/I covers most of the world. If your route includes South Africa, Switzerland, Italy or Brazil, check specifically — those are the four that regularly defeat "universal" adapters.

4. Fuse and certification. A replaceable fuse and genuine certification marks. This is the component sitting in a hotel wall socket overnight with your laptop attached; it is not the place to save eight dollars.

One thing you do not need: a voltage converter. Laptop and phone chargers are all dual-voltage 100-240V, so an adapter that only changes the plug shape is sufficient. Converters are for hair dryers and kettles, and they are heavy.
